Climate Information


Fairlie, New Zealand, located in the Mackenzie District of the South Island, has a temperate oceanic climate. Here are the key features of its climate:

  • Summer (December–February):

    Warm and pleasant, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Nights can be cooler.

  • Autumn (March–May):

    Cooler temperatures, with crisp mornings and mild days. Trees in the area display stunning autumn colors.

  • Winter (June–August):

    Cold, with frequent frosts and occasional snowfall. Daytime temperatures are typically between 5°C and 10°C (41°F to 50°F). Nearby ski fields, such as those at Lake Tekapo and Mount Dobson, attract visitors during this season.

  • Spring (September–November):

    Gradually warming temperatures, with blossoms and greenery returning. It can still be chilly, especially early in the season.

  • Rainfall

    Fairlie receives moderate rainfall throughout the year, averaging about 700-800 mm (28-31 inches). Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed, though late spring and early summer can be slightly wetter.

  • Wind and Sunshine

    The area is known for its clear, sunny skies, particularly in winter. Winds are generally light but can pick up occasionally.


    Fairlie’s location near the Southern Alps contributes to its crisp winters and sunny days, making it a picturesque spot with diverse seasonal experiences.


  • Recommended Packing

    We recommend you bring on your hunt to New Zealand. 


    • 2 pair hunting trousers – light / medium weight

    • 2 shirts – one light and one medium weight

    • Minimum 3 pair of woollen socks, or whatever you like best that wont slip inside your boots and cause discomfort. 

    • 2 mid layer long or short sleeve tops

    • 1 pair of Boot Gators

    • 1-2 sets of thurmal underwear – preferably wool or poly

    •1   lightweight jacket

    • 1 warm hunting jacket (puffer style or similar.

    • 1 set of high-quality lightweight/breathable raingear – jacket and pants

    •pair of gloves – for warmth and ideally water resistant.

    •Warm or insulated hat or cap

    •Well broken in boots – CLEAN (a good support boot (Meindl/Kenetrek/Lowa style)

    •Binoculars, ideally with hands free style harness, (preferably 8 or 10 power, the guides are outfitted with spotting scopes and rangefinders)

    •Small day pack, big enough to hold a lunchbox, water bottle, and surplus clothing you may take off during the day, also allow room for any personal items you may want to bring also.

    • Lightweight flashlight or head lamp

    • Camera and spare digital card, with your 110/220v charger

    • Sunglasses

    • Rifle with at least 40 rounds of ammunition, unless of course you are using our complimentary Rifles ammunition will be provided.


    As per personal items – it is recommended that you bring at least 2 times the required stay days for prescriptions and daily-required medicines for the duration of your trip to New Zealand. These should also NOT be packed in your luggage but taken as carry-on to avoid lost baggage delays. Also, it is a good idea to bring an extra – pair of glasses, contacts and daily cleaner, and other ‘essential’ items for your trip. Also, consider sunscreen, allergy medicine, and any other type of ‘seasonal’ item which you may require during your trip.


    Be sure to include some casual clothing to relax in around the lodge during the evening and for any activities you may choose to do outside of the hunting area. an easy slip on or off comfortable shoe is also ideal for walking between the chalets and lodge. 


    Please Note:

    New Zealand uses 220volt power supply, you will need to get a 110v-220v adapting plug compatible to our New Zealand power outlets, this can damage some items such as Hairdryers, Electric Shavers etc unless the correct adaptor is used. These can easily be found at most international Airports.


    We have Found the KUIU, SITKA and  layered clothing to be very adequate for New Zealand Hunting Conditions, anything similar to these brands will be ideal also. 


    We have laundry facilities at the camp and boot dryers also, so ensuring you start every day comfortable is not a problem for those wanting to pack a little lighter.


    please remember if there is a few things you forget we are likely to have what you need, walking poles, binoculars, jackets etc are here on request.
